Keelia Paulsen, of Des Moines, took her love for painting
and art and decided to put it on an old pair of shoes in 2009. She took a pair
she never wore in hopes of making them into something she would wear. She was
pleasantly surprised with the response she received. "People would see
them when I was out with my friends, they would say your shoes are really cool,"
Paulsen said. All of the positive feedback led to the beginning of Khenri Shoes,
where she runs the business out of her apartment. The business name is combination
of her and her daughter's name, Henrietta. She is known by some as the "shoe
girl." Paulsen said, "Everyone has a few pair of shoes that they love
but they don't love enough to wear." That's where she comes in to fix them
up. However, Paulsen does work on new shoes as well. Paulsen said that getting
to know a client's personality and sense of style is important to her in designing
a pair of shoes that will best suit the client.
